1906–11
 
Strikes and labor troubles. Vineyard workers organized in the Conféderation générale des vignerons (CGT) (1907). Postal workers in Paris struck and demanded the right to unionize and affiliate with the CGT (April–May 1909). The government met the strike with massive firings and denied the right of civil servants to strike. Railway workers struck in northern France, and Briand called out the troops (Oct. 18, 1909). The National Union of Railway Workers and Employees then called a general strike but recanted in the wake of a collapse of support.  1
 
1906
 
Charter of Amiens established the central tenets of revolutionary syndicalism, including the necessity of the general strike. It became the official doctrine of the CGT.  2
 
1907
 
Reforms gave women more rights within the family. Mothers gained the same authority as fathers over their children, and unmarried mothers were allowed to exercise paternal power over their children. Married women also gained control over the monies they had earned.  3
 
1909
 
Union française pour le suffrage des femmes was organized by Jeanne-E. Schmahl, Cécile Brunschwicg, and Marguerite de Witt-Schlumberger. Parlement established a committee that drew up a bill to extend the municipal franchise to all women, but women's suffrage would not become a reality until 1944.  4
 
1911
 
Second Moroccan crisis (See June–Nov) and other international problems dominated the ministries of Joseph Caillaux (July 27, 1911–Jan. 10, 1912), and Raymond Poincaré (Jan. 14, 1912–Jan. 18, 1913).  5
 
1913, Aug
 
A law increasing military service from two to three years carried, with vigorous opposition from Radical Socialists and Socialists. Debate over its revocation continued until World War I. (See France)  6
