THE RUSSIAN-JAPANESE WAR began after Russians failed to respond to Japanese notes. Russia suffered major military defeats, both on land and on sea. A major Russian war fleet was destroyed in the Battle of Tsushima Straits (May 1905), and the war came to an end with the TREATY OF PORTSMOUTH (Sept. 1905). The settlement represented a major advance of Japanese interests in Korea and northern China.  1

In the British treaty with Tibet, the Tibetan lama agreed not to cede or lease territory to any foreign power, thus stopping the Russian advance.  3

Franco-Spanish treaty regarding Morocco publicly affirmed Moroccan independence but secretly provided for eventual partition.  4
