Code of Criminal Law did away with capital punishment, replacing it with life imprisonment at hard labor.  1

A compromise declared Hungary a separate country subject to the same succession as other Habsburg lands.  2

Jacobins discovered in Austria-Hungary. Many arrested, imprisoned, and executed.  3

Government began to curtail service exemptions in the military.  4

Peace of Campo Formio ended conflict between Austria and France (See Oct. 17). Despite its inability to maintain hostilities, Austria continued to oppose France.  5

Government centralization began with the creation of a Conference Ministry.  6

Francis II assumed title emperor of Austria and then abdicated (Aug. 6, 1806) as Holy Roman Emperor and thus ended the Holy Roman Empire.  7
