José Simeón Azcona Hoyo was elected president. He faced a stagnant economy, restless peasant and labor groups, and serious threats from emergent guerrilla groups.  2

Two U.S. officials and a Honduran military officer admitted CIA collusion in the murder and disappearance of over 200 Hondurans during the early 1980s. These admissions fed anti-U.S. sentiment, already growing because of Contra atrocities committed on Honduran soil.  3
