In response to widespread protests in Panama, the U.S. announced the final withdrawal of troops from its wartime bases.  2

Presidential elections produced a close and contested decision between former president Arnulfo Arias and the Liberal Domingo Díaz Arosemena. The latter finally won and on Oct. 1 succeeded Enrique Jiménez as president of Panama.  3
