Workers founded the United Federation of Workers of Honduras (FUTH). Strikes during 1981 prevented the government from implementing an IMF-imposed austerity program.  1
 
1982
 
U.S. ambassador John Negroponte arrived in Honduras, marking the acceleration of Honduran involvement in the Contra war in Nicaragua. Negroponte oversaw the explosion of U.S. military aid to Honduras, which grew from $2 million in 1980 to $144 million in 1982–83.  2

Roberto Suazo Córdova assumed the presidency, the first civilian to hold that post in nine years. The military, however, continued to play a dominant political role.  3
