The government quelled a revolt in Caracas led by members of the outlawed Communist and Democratic Action Parties.  1

In the wake of charges of fraud concerning the Nov. 30 election results, Col. Marcos Pérez Jiménez was named provisional president by the National Assembly to serve “until constitutional government is reestablished.”  2
 
1957, Nov. 4
 
Facing a severe recession, capital flight, and widespread political mobilization, Pérez Jiménez canceled the presidential election scheduled for Dec. 15 and announced a plebiscite instead. On Nov. 8, the government announced its readiness to initiate its own aid program for Latin America.  3
