The government was overthrown, and a military junta under Col. Carlos Delgado Chalbaud took control.  1

This period is known as Venezuela's oil boom. Oil production more than doubled, and massive foreign investment rolled in. Urbanization exploded, massively expanding Caracas and making Venezuela among the most urbanized nations in Latin America. Over a million foreigners also immigrated to the country's burgeoning cities.  2
