A military junta, led by Adm. Wolfgang Larrazabal ousted Pres. Pérez Jiménez. The junta assumed power after army units defeated the secret police in Caracas.  1

During U.S. vice president Richard Nixon's goodwill tour of South America, mobs in Caracas stoned his car. Pres. Dwight Eisenhower demanded that Nixon's safety be ensured by Venezuela and ordered marines to Caribbean bases as a “precautionary measure.”  2

Rómulo Betancourt (1908–81) of the Democratic Action Party was elected president. Betancourt promised gradual reform. He raised the tax rate on oil profits to 65 percent and initiated moderate agrarian and social reforms.  3
