2000, April 9

Congressional elections in Peru yielded a majority for Pres. Fujimori's Peru 2000 Party, but Fujimori failed to get a majority of votes in the presidential election. A runoff was scheduled for May 28.  1

May 21

Fujimori's only remaining opponent for the presidency, Alejandro Toledo, withdrew, claiming the election was a fraud. International election observation teams, including one from OAS, abandoned the Peruvian elections in protest of voter irregularities and computer imprecision in counting the ballots. Apparently winning the election by only one percentage point, Fujimori's July 28 inauguration saw widespread rioting in Lima, leaving many of the buildings in flames and six people dead.  2

Sept. 14

A videotape of Fujimori's closest political advisor, Vladimiro Montesinos, was released to the public and indicated that bribery may have played a part in Montesinos's campaign activities. Shortly thereafter, Montesinos went into hiding, and there was widespread fear that he would organize a military coup if Fujimori's government were overthrown.  3

Sept. 16

Fujimori agreed to cut his presidential term short in light of the scandals but refused to hand power over to a transitional government before new elections, planned for March or July 2001, could take place. Meanwhile, opposition leader and presidential hopeful Alejandro Toledo led the calls for Fujimori to step down.  4

Nov. 20

With mounting civil unrest over the whereabouts of the fugitive Vladimiro Montesinos, Pres. Fujimori flew to Japan and resigned, along with both of his vice presidents. Two days later, the Peruvian Congress swore in legislative leader Valentin Paniagua Corazao as interim president, he being Peru's next-highest remaining elected official.  5
