Peruvian Indians filed a class-action lawsuit against Texaco, seeking $1 billion in damages. The suit, filed in New York City, alleged environmental damage due to improper oil disposal in neighboring Ecuador.  2

Fighting erupted on the border between Peru and Ecuador over land that Ecuador ceded to Peru in 1941. Though the border issue remained unresolved, Peru and Ecuador signed a truce on Feb. 17.  3

Peruvian police killed three alleged members of Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement (MRTA) in a 2-day siege of a house in a Lima suburb. Police also arrested Lori Helene Berenson, a U.S. citizen who rented the house occupied by rebels.  5
