Pres. Fujimori seized near dictatorial powers to facilitate the fight against Sendero Luminoso. Congress was dissolved, the constitution suspended, the press censored, and opposition leaders arrested. The move had widespread support.  1

SENDERO LUMINOSO LEADER ABIMAEL GUZMÁN WAS CAPTURED. After a trial he was sentenced to life imprisonment. Other arrests followed.  2

Failed coup attempt against Fujimori.  3
 
Nov. 22
 
Fujimori supporters won a clear majority in the new Congress, which had been assembled to rewrite the constitution.  4
