Violent rioting followed the revelation that a former minister of the interior had maintained contacts with Fidel Castro. The cabinet was obliged to resign, and the government suspended constitutional rights.  1

Death of Pres. Barrientos in a helicopter accident. He was succeeded by V.P. Adolfo Siles Salinas.  2
 
Sept. 26
 
Pres. Siles was overthrown by a military coup and was followed by Pres. Alfredo Ovando Candia, commander in chief of the armed forces, who introduced a more liberal policy: political prisoners were released, troops were withdrawn from the mines, and restrictions on trade unions were rescinded.  3
 
Oct. 17
