Tin miners struck against the government and occupied the mines. The government sent in troops and began to draft insurgent workers into the army.  1

Military-controlled elections gave victory to Pres. Barrientos, whose promilitary Bolivian Revolutionary Front controlled Congress.  2
 
1967, March–Oct
 
A formidable guerrilla movement emerged in southeast Bolivia, led by the Cuban revolutionary Che Guevara. Bolivian forces, with U.S. training, captured Guevara and managed to suppress the movement. Guevara died of his wounds (Oct. 8).  3
 
Sept. 24
 
Government troops led a daybreak massacre of hundreds of men, women, and children at the Siglo XX mine. The victims were accused of being guerrilla sympathizers.  4
