An army coup forced Pres. Ovando to resign (Oct. 6). Gen. Rogelio Miranda, army chief of staff, appointed a ruling junta. But air force officers, led by leftist Gen. Juan José Torres and supported by students and workers, claimed the presidency and began to attack army posts. The junta capitulated, and Torres became president (Oct. 7).  1
