In Buenos Aires, 50,000 people rallied to protest the lack of action against former torturers and murderers. Pres. Alfonsín moved trials of officials from military to civilian courts, resulting in life sentences for Adm. Emilio Massera and Gen. Jorge Rafael Videla.  1

Facing 1,000 percent inflation and a foreign debt near $50 billion, Alfonsín replaced the peso with a new currency unit, the austral. The plan froze prices but also cut wages by 30 percent and decreased public spending.  2
