Fearing military reprisals for convictions against torturers, Pres. Alfonsín decided to end further prosecutions related to torture.  1
 
1987, April
 
Military officers close to former torturers launched the Easter coup, almost managing to overthrow Alfonsín. Nearly 1 million civilians rallied for democracy in the Plaza de Mayo in opposition to the coup. Pres. Alfonsín agreed to grant amnesty to all but 50 officers still under charges.  2
