After a three-week standoff at the home of Slovakia's former prime minister Meciar, a commando force finally used dynamite to locate and arrest him on charges of fraud and abuse of power. Meciar was accused of giving illegal bonuses to his cabinet ministers while he was in office.  1

Pres. Schuster of Slovakia struggled with an ongoing illness as his cabinet transferred presidential power to the prime minister, Mikulas Dzurinda, and the speaker of Parliament, Jozef Migas.  2
 
Sept. 23
 
A meeting was held peacefully between IMF and World Bank officials and representatives from opposition organizations, many of whom criticized IMF and World Bank policies as elitist, racist, and harmful to the environment.  3
 
Sept. 26–27
 
More than 15,000 delegates from 182 countries met in the Czech Republic capital of Prague for the annual conference of the IMF and the World Bank. Conference delegates were trapped in the convention center for several hours by thousands of protestors. The demonstrators, reflecting the rising anti-globalization movement, turned violent on Sept. 26 after having resisted bloodlessly for more than a week.  4
