The Central Commitee replaced ernik as premier with Lubomir Strougal. ernik was later (Dec.) expelled from the Communist Party.  1
The attempt of the Czechoslovak leaders to bring about a relaxation of the communist system was watched with keen anticipation throughout the world, and the Soviet–Warsaw Pact invasion and occupation of the country once again revealed the determination of Moscow to maintain that system. The Soviets charged that the Czech leaders were flirting with the West Germans and their “imperialist” allies and thereby endangering the entire communist bloc.  2
