1969, April

The Central Committee of the Czech Communist Party removed Dubek, Smrkovsky, and other liberal leaders from office. Gustáv Husák replaced Dubek as first secretary of the party.  1

Sept. 28

Dubek was ousted from the presidium of the Central Committee and forced to resign as chairman of the National Assembly. These were merely discrete steps in the process of eliminating him entirely from Czech public life. On Dec. 15 he was appointed Czech ambassador to Turkey, the remaining steps being his resignation as a member of the Central Committee (Jan. 28, 1970), his expulsion from the Communist Party (June 26, 1970), and, finally, the loss of his seat in the Assembly (July 8, 1970).  2
