When the king failed to reply promptly to their petition, a crowd attacked the governor's residence. The governor refunded the tax and the Danish government instigated an investigation. Poll tax removed (1772).  1

First Norwegian census taken. The Norwegian population was approximately 700,000.  2

The Lofthus Rising. Christian Jensen Lofthus went to Copenhagen as spokesman for the farmers to appeal for justice. Lofthus voiced discontent over government tax policies and bureaucracy. After he left, he was arrested.  3

The Society for Norway's Welfare founded to work for Norway's economic and educational progress and possible independence.  4

Royal Frederik's University established in Oslo.  5
