Popular uprising against Godoy at Aranjuez. Charles thereupon abdicated (March 19), but Murat, who arrived soon afterward at Madrid, induced the king to retract his abdication and persuaded both Charles and Ferdinand to meet Napoleon. | 5 |

The Bayonne Conference. Napoleon told Ferdinand to abdicate the throne he had just assumed. Then Charles was forced to abdicate in Napoleon's favor (May 10). Both princes were given estates in France and handsome pensions. | 6 |

JOSEPH, Napoleon's brother, became king of Spain (See 1806). Joseph attempted to improve government and social welfare, introducing a cabinet system of government and increasing government centralization. He also increased government control of medical facilities, improved innoculation facilities, and founded or improved hospitals. Before this, welfare had rested largely in the hands of the church and the family. Inquisition abolished (restored 1814, abolished again 1820). (See Spain) | 7 |
