The UN approved the deployment of more than 5,500 peacekeeping troops to the Democratic Republic of the Congo.  1

Seven members of the UN Security Council met in Congo for peace discussions with Pres. Kabila and traveled to the capitals of several of the other countries involved in the fighting. Though Kabila signed a rough agreement for UN intervention, he hampered the UN's ability to send peacekeeping troops into the country, blocking their movement and encouraging attacks on UN forces.  2

In a sudden reversal of his lack of cooperation, Pres. Kabila attended peace talks in Lusaka, Zambia, and agreed to allow UN peacekeeping troops to monitor a cease-fire in the Congo civil war.  3
