UN officials reported the involvement of both government and UNITA troops in the civil war in Zaire. It was reported that UNITA supported forces loyal to Mobutu, and the government supported rebel forces allied with Laurent Kabila. Savimbi was accused of resuming military action against the government despite his agreement to the peace process.  1

Chevron Oil Company announced a major new offshore oil discovery.  2
 
May
 
The government officially recognized the new government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire) and welcomed Kabila's victory.  3
