Pres. Bill Clinton visited Uganda, praising the nation's growing economy and making a controversial apology for U.S. policies of the past concerning slavery and for neglect during the cold war.  1

Uganda joined forces with Rwanda in assisting Congolese rebels in an attempted overthrow of Congo (formerly Zaire) president Laurent Kabila, the successor of Mobutu Sese Seko. Both nations had supported Kabila's rise to power but came to oppose him less than a year after he took office.  2
