A renegotiation of the Anglo-Egyptian relationship concerning Sudan led to an agreement for Sudanization of administration within three years, followed by independence.  1
 
1955–72
 
A civil war between southern and northern Sudan was set in motion by the alienation of south from the north and its Islam-oriented capital, by population transfers, and by the destruction of the southern economy.  2

The Somali Youth League won two-thirds of the seats in the newly elected Somali legislature.  3

An Eritrean border war with Ethiopia began over territorial conflicts that originated with Eritrean separation from Ethiopia and independence in 1993.  4
 
Aug. 20
 
The U.S. destroyed a pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in Khartoum, Sudan, that was allegedly producing chemical weapons. This international strike against suspected orchestrator Osama bin Laden, Islamic militant and wealthy businessman, was sparked by the bombing of U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania on Aug. 7, when more than 250 people were killed (See Aug. 7).  5
