Moi's government carried out a wave of detentions against opposition group MwaKenya, which claimed to uphold the ideals of the Mau Mau fighters.  1

Multiparty elections in Kenya resulted in the reelection of Pres. Daniel arap Moi and the KANU Party, but the opposition charged electoral fraud.  2

In another disputed election, it was confirmed that Pres. Moi won reelection in a close race between several candidates. His party, KANU, secured 107 of the 210 seats in the national legislature.  3
 
Aug. 7
 
In an attack blamed on Islamic terrorists, a truck bomb devastated the U.S. embassy in Nairobi, killing some 243 people and injuring thousands more. U.S. officials believed wealthy Saudi businessman and terrorist leader Osama bin Laden responsible for the explosion; that same day in Tanzania ten people were killed when another U.S. embassy was bombed.  4
