Nigerian forces captured almost 50 high-level officials of the rebel military junta of Sierra Leone in Monrovia, Liberia. The rebels had fled there after being ousted from power the previous day. Because of his aid to rebels in war-torn Sierra Leone, Liberian president Charles Taylor received widespread international criticism. Rebel leaders from the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) of Sierra Leone continued to give Taylor a huge cut from its illegal diamond trade in return for money and arms.  1

The United Nations agreed to Taylor's proposal for ongoing international monitors along Liberia's border with Sierra Leone, although cooperation was limited. The UN approved various international restrictions on Liberia and its role in the Sierra Leone diamond trade.  2
