When the Asian economic crisis invaded Japan, the LDP saw a drastic popular decline in Japanese elections for the upper house. Prime Minister Hashimoto Rytar resigned and was replaced on July 24 by Obuchi Keizo, also of the LDP. The recession facing Japan in 1998 was the worst to strike the nation since World War II.  2
