Murayama resigned as prime minister of Japan, saying that the country needed new leadership. The Parliament subsequently voted in Hashimoto Rytar of the Liberal Democratic Party to be his successor.  1

Two Japanese banks merged to form the largest bank in the world in terms of assets. It was called the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi Ltd.  2
