Under the new constitution of Oct. 1980, Chn was elected president again. His constitution limited an individual to one term as president.  1

Chn was the first head of state to be a guest at the White House under Pres. Ronald Reagan, an honor seen as U.S. sanctioning of his presidency.  2
As punishment for allegedly inciting the Kwangju riots, Kim Tae-jung had been sentenced to death; this was commuted to life, and later to a 20-year term (1982).  3
