Pres. Wahid suspended the influential Gen. Wiranto from the Indonesian cabinet due to allegations that Wiranto engaged in war crimes during the East Timor crisis.  1

Separatists declared West Papua, formally called Irian Jaya, an independent state. Because West Papua was an area rich in natural resources such as copper and gold it was blankly denied independence by Pres. Wahid. Similar calls for independence emerged in the oil-rich province of Aceh, a devoutly Muslim area seeking Islamic law and political autonomy. Riots and violence resulted in Indonesia.  2

Pressed by the legislature, Pres. Wahid agreed to share executive power with V.P. Megawati Sukarnoputri, the daughter of former president Sukarno.  3
