Negotiations began between Dutch and Indonesian representatives (See Oct. 12), while Dutch and British troops slowly pushed back the Indonesian forces into central and eastern Java.  1

Following the conclusion of a military truce, the Dutch and Indonesians initialed the CHERIBON AGREEMENT providing for Dutch recognition of the Indonesian Republic (Java, Sumatra, and Madura) and the establishment of the United States of Indonesia, to include, besides the Indonesian Republic, the states of Borneo and the Great East (Celebes, the Sunda Islands, and the Moluccas). The whole was to be joined with the Netherlands in equal partnership under the Dutch crown. The agreement was signed on March 25, 1947.  2
