In Netherlands New Guinea, after the first elected legislative council was sworn in, the Netherlands government told its 28 members to work out a date and method for self-determination within a year.  1
 
1962, Aug. 15
 
Dutch and Indonesian negotiators signed an agreement in New York to transfer the administration of West New Guinea (West Irian) from the Netherlands to the UN on Oct. 1, 1962, and to Indonesia on May 1, 1963. Indonesia ratified the agreement on Sept. 1, and the Netherlands on Sept. 13. The UN General Assembly approved the settlement on Sept. 31.  2
 
1963, Feb. 13
 
Sukarno announced Indonesia's opposition to the British-sponsored federation of Malaysia and voiced support for the rebel troops in British Borneo.  3
 
May 18
 
The 623-person congress unanimously named Sukarno president for life. Congress members had been appointed by Sukarno.  4
