Pres. Sukarno decreed the restoration of the 1945 constitution and dissolved the constituent assembly. On July 6 Premier Kartawidjaja's cabinet resigned. On July 8 a new ten-person “inner” cabinet with Sukarno in the premiership was announced. On July 22 Parliament voted to continue under the 1945 constitution.  1

Following the government's prohibition of trade in rural areas by the Chinese, Communist China protested Indonesia's “most cruel treatment” of Chinese residents, regarded as “nationals of a hostile country.” In a formal reply, Indonesia charged Beijing's diplomats with inciting Chinese residents to defy presidential regulations.  2
