A government spokesman revealed that 25,000 troops had been sent (March 1) to suppress the extremist Muslim movement Darul Islam and armed bands of Communists and outlaws in Java.  1
 
1952, Dec. 31
 
The government announced its decision to participate in the Colombo Plan (See Nov. 28) but declared that its decision to join “does not and will not obligate Indonesia either politically or militarily.”  2
 
1953, March 16
 
A major outburst of violence occurred when the government attempted to enforce its land redistribution program, affecting illegal squatters.  3
 
July 30
 
Pres. Sukarno announced the formation of a primarily leftist government, headed by Ali Sastroamidjojo. The Muslim Party for the first time since 1949 was not represented in the cabinet.  4
