Sukarno was elected first president and Mohammed Hatta became first prime minister of the United States of Indonesia.  1

As the result of UN efforts, the Netherlands and the Republic of Indonesia formally transferred sovereignty to the UNITED STATES OF INDONESIA, a federal republic of 16 states, whose independence was proclaimed simultaneously at its capital of Jakarta (Batavia). The status of Dutch New Guinea, which remained outside the new federation, was to be determined in future negotiations.  2
