The Netherlands and the Republic of Indonesia signed a truce agreement on board the USS Renville, which laid down the principles to serve as a basis for future negotiations. Immediately, however, differences arose as to the interpretation of these principles.  1

A new Indonesian cabinet was formed under Mohammed Hatta.  2

Indonesian Communists, under the leadership of Muso, a veteran Communist recently returned from Moscow, set up a “soviet government” at Madioen (Java). The government intervened successfully, and the Communists withdrew to the jungle.  3
