A group of fundamentalist Islamic religious leaders ruled that the PPP must dismiss Benazir Bhutto and elect a male leader.  1
 
1990, Aug. 6
 
The president used his constitutional powers to dissolve the National Assembly and then dismissed Bhutto as prime minister, along with her cabinet. He declared a state of emergency and announced a fresh general election for October.  2
 
Sept
 
Benazir Bhutto was charged with ten counts of corruption and misuse of power. Immigration authorities were given a list of 32 people, including Benazir and her husband, to prevent from leaving the country.  3
 
Oct. 24
 
In new elections, a coalition led by Mian Nawaz Sharif won; he was sworn in as prime minister; the state of emergency was lifted.  4
