“Land Grab” campaigns by Communist and Socialist parties as symbolic seizure of large holdings and redistribution to needy peasants. The leaders of the movement were arrested.  1
 
Sept. 2
 
Abolition of the allowances and privileges of the former princes was voted by the lower house, with the support of Socialists and Communists. The bill was then rejected by the upper house, but put into effect by presidential fiat (Sept. 6).  2
 
Oct. 2
 
Suspension of the Uttar Pradesh government by decree of the prime minister. Under pressure and criticism, Mrs. Gandhi reversed her decision (Oct. 17) and permitted the formation of a coalition government under old Congress Party leadership.  3
 
Dec. 15
 
The Indian Supreme Court ruled that the presidential orders abolishing the privileges of former rulers were illegal. Mrs. Gandhi stated that her government nonetheless remained committed to their abolition.  4
