The Congress Party accepted Mrs. Gandhi's program for nationalization of banks, restrictions on foreign capital, ceiling on incomes, and so on, representing a policy of socialization to forestall further gains by the Communists.  2

Election of V. V. Giri as president, by a narrow margin. He was the candidate of Mrs. Gandhi and the left wing of the Congress Party.  3

Congress Party leaders of the right wing (the Syndicate) expelled Mrs. Gandhi for indiscipline, but the lower house of Parliament gave her overwhelming support. The Syndicate then formed the Congress Parliamentary Party under Ram Subhag Singh, as opposition to Mrs. Gandhi.  4
