INVASION OF INDIA BY CHINESE COMMUNIST TROOPS (See 1962, Oct. 21–Nov. 22). On Oct. 29 Prime Minister Nehru asked for U.S. military aid.  1

Nehru dismissed V. K. Krishna Menon as minister of defense, in the wake of a Chinese military advance, and assumed the post himself.  2
 
Nov. 19
 
Since Indian troops were retreating in the face of a massive Chinese attack, Nehru asked U.S. president Kennedy for further military aid. Two days later the U.S. responded by sending India transport planes with U.S. crews.  3
 
Nov. 21
 
Communist China unexpectedly ordered a cease-fire along the Indian border and offered to draw its troops back of the “lines of actual control” that existed as of Nov. 7, 1959. Fighting ceased the next day.  4
 
Dec. 14
 
Although Nehru had rejected the Chinese offer of a cease-fire and negotiations, India announced the beginning of a massive Chinese troop withdrawal from the northeastern frontier area.  5
