The Tangier Conference, attended by representatives from the Moroccan Istiqlal Party, the Algerian FLN, and the Tunisian Neo-Destour Party. Morocco and Tunisia pledged their support for Algerian independence.  2
 
May 19
 
Formation of the Algiers Committee of Public Safety under the leadership of Gen. Jacques Massu. The committee was dominated by high-ranking military officers stationed in Algeria and sympathetic to the demands of the French colonists. The generals assumed direction of the colonial government in Algiers until Charles de Gaulle appointed their superior, Gen. Raoul Salan, as delegate-general (June6).  3
 
Sept. 19
 
Establishment of the provisional government of the Algerian Republic, which operated in exile, first from Cairo and later from Tunis. Ferhat Abbas was named the first president.  4
