Opening of an eight-day national strike, called by the Algerian rebels. The demonstration provoked the BATTLE OF ALGIERS with French authorities. Over the next six months, troops under Gen. Jacques Massu systematically uprooted the organized resistance within Algiers, particularly in the Qasbah, the old section of the city.  1
