Religious leaders allowed the first local elections since 1979. Pres. Muhammad Khatami's new moderate party, begun only three months earlier, carried the vote in several cities and won large victories nationwide.  1

Pro-democracy students in Tehran were attacked by a militant Islamic group that killed eight and injured dozens more. During six more days, student protests swept across cities throughout Iran; the uprisings were violently suppressed by national police forces. Pres. Khatami condemned the riots, and many questioned his devotion to continued calls for greater democracy in the Iranian government.  2
