Iran elected moderate Mohammed Khatami the new president against a more religiously conservative opponent. Khatami called for a more open and tolerant society.  1

Iran sent several thousand troops to its border with Afghanistan after the Taliban government admitted responsibility for the Aug. 8 murder of eight Iranian diplomats and a journalist. With a majority of Shi’ite Muslims composing its population, Iran had openly supported the rebels fighting against the Sunni Taliban.  2
