Prime Minister Cheddi Jagan of Guyana, founder and leader of the People's Progressive Party and a major figure in Guyanese politics since the 1950s, died. In subsequent elections (Dec. 15) his widow, Janet Jagan, was elected to succeed him.  1

Prime minister of Bermuda, David Saul, unexpectedly resigned. The ruling United Bermuda Party elected Pamela Gordon as his replacement, making her the first woman to serve as Bermuda's political leader.  2

The ruling People's National Party of Jamaica won 49 of 60 seats in parliamentary elections; victory gave the PNP control of the government for an unprecedented third term.  3
