Anguilla, Bermuda, the Cayman Islands, Montserrat, Turks and Caicos, and the British Virgin Islands remained as British possessions. Like their independent neighbors, these colonies were heavily dependent on tourism for survival, but because of direct aid from Britain they tended to be somewhat more prosperous.  1

Keith Mitchell of the New National Party was sworn in as new prime minister of Grenada.  4

Bermuda voters in referendum rejected independence from Great Britain. Prime Minister John Swan announced his plans to step down because of the result.  5

Basdeo Panday became the new prime minister of Trinidad and Tobago after his party, the United National Congress, formed several strong coalitions. Panday was the nation's first prime minister of South Asian descent.  6
