Carlos Roberto Flores Facusse of the ruling Liberal Party won the presidential elections.  3

Carlos Roberto Flores Facusse of the Liberal Party took office as president. Flores immediately began measures to modernize the Honduran economy and government in an effort to raise the standard of living for the poor and increase international competitiveness.  4

Pres. Flores further stifled the influence of the Honduran military by quickly passing legislation through Congress that gave control of the military to the presidentially appointed minister of defense, making military autonomy a much smaller problem in the national political equation.  5

Hurricane Mitch demolished much of Honduras. The $5 billion in damage and 2 million homeless caused a precipitous economic decline as 70 percent of Honduran crops were lost for the year.  6
