After suspension of hostilities in Surinam's civil war, the SLA signed a peace accord that included an OAS-supervised surrender of weapons.  1
 
1999, June
 
Surinam president Jules Wijdenbosch, pressured by the National Assembly and widespread public discontent over the poor economy, agreed to resign but remain in office until after the May 2000 election. Seventy percent inflation and territorial disputes with neighboring Guyana continued to thwart the Surinam economy.  2
 
2000, May 25
 
Pres. Wijdenbosch was defeated in the executive elections by former president Ronald Venetiaan of the New Front for Democracy and Development. The four-party, labor-supported coalition secured 33 of the 52 seats in elections for the legislature, one seat shy of a two-thirds majority.  3
